PSMA's GNAF system
http://www.psma.com.au/products/gnaf.cfm

According to the PSMA website:
"G-NAF® (Geocoded National Address File) is Australia’s first authoritative geocoded address index for the whole country, listing all valid physical addresses in Australia. It contains approximately 12.6 million physical addresses, each linked to its unique geocode (that is, the specific latitude and longitude of the address). Data used to build G-NAF® comes from contributors that include the Australian Electoral Commission, Australia Post, state, territory and Australian Government mapping agencies and land registries.

G-NAF® is the single, national authoritative source for:

* validating customer-provided addresses (assisting in fraud prevention)
* identifying the geocode for spatial analysis (creating maps to plot and analyse services and customer locations), and
* assembling and maintaining large address files (reducing duplication and costs, increasing efficiency and improving mail delivery)."

Enabling access to this dataset would facilitate the linking of georeferenced information (datasets, reports, etc.) to relevant locations for mapping and research purposes.

The G-NAF is fundamental data, but there are many issues still.

For example: Currency

The data update cycle with the State sourced address data needs to be reduced to improve its currency. My organization uses the Department of Sustainability VicMap Address from Victoria, under licence. This same data goes into G-NAF but is not as current.

I believe that PSMA is working on this.

If all of Government did use a consistent address file and validate all data entry agiants this file, then many 'dirty data' headaches would go away and the exchange of data across government could be significantly improved.

I cannot begin to decroibe th emount of time wasted trying to clean up and geocode government datasets with rubbish address fields.

This is a huge issue for emergency services. If data provided by government for, as an example, aged-care facilities or hospitals, is not correctly addressed this can cause a delay in ability for Triple-0 Computer Aided Dispatch systems (CAD) to verify the location and dispatch an emergency responder.
