  Historical sound recordings and films

  I know that institutions such as NLA and ABC hold huge archives of recordings of Australian history - historical music, news coverage of significant events, oral history interviews and so on.   Maps. As Many As Possible.

  We can look at the images that google maps holds, but we can't take them and make our own maps, just drop the odd "marker" on them. The government, however, various agencies, hold many maps that could be released for citizen re-use. Or they could even simply contribute useful information to the growing open-source projects out there such as Open Street Map, which have streetmaps that the public can use... http://www.openstreetmap.org/ ...more »

  However, our governments have more than just street data... why not maps of salinity, vegetation coverage, altitude and so on, all in a format that we can overlay on our existing maps?

  All states - current emergencies and incidents

  This is a slightly harder one, but there is no one place anyone can go to find out what emergencies or issues are happening in my area, or in anywhere I might be heading. The SA CFS site could be a starting point for this information: http://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/news_media/current_incidents.jsp Surely information could be gathered for all jurisdictions which could then be consolidated into a single feed, but this ...more »

  This is a slightly harder one, but there is no one place anyone can go to find out what emergencies or issues are happening in my area, or in anywhere I might be heading.

  Land title/registry

  Imagine the potential if land title information could be mashed up with other geo data. Simply having the geo location for every street address in Australia freely available would be incredible. Imagine if you could find out how the property is zoned, maybe who or what owns it. To the best of my knowledge all this information is kept at the state/territory level.   API access to CDATA (census data)

  CDATA is a fantastic system from the ABS to access census data (http://www.abs.gov.au/CDATAOnline) - however it would be even better if it could be accessed via an API that allowed the data to be mashed-up easily into other sites.

  Development applications

  I know this is a local government responsibility, but making development applications available would be awesome. City of Sydney already does a litmited version of this

  Image library from Department of Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts

  http://www.environment.gov.au/about/media/imagedb/index.html Department of environment currently charges for access to its image library. There are thousands of beautiful images of our natural flora and fauna, and NRM projects etc - some are even georeferenced already. They should be publicly available.

  AusTender Contract Notices, Standing Offers and Suppliers

  https://www.tenders.gov.au/ has alot of useful information and an export data feed (https://www.tenders.gov.au/?event=public.reports.listCNWeeklyExport) but it isn't easily accessable and the licencing isn't very friendly. Only 500 records can be downloaded per search; this is about a quiet day's worth of data. This kind of information has been very useful in other mashups such as http://www.usaspending.gov/ and http://data.octo.dc.gov/ ...more »

  AES electorate boundaries and information on past elections

  All the electorate boundaries and past election data (who stood, votes, winners) for Australia - from presentday back to our first elections.

  Currently Tallyroom provides Australia's most useful electorate maps for those without expensive GIS systems (http://www.tallyroom.com.au/maps)

  Possible implementations could include:

  - Permanent URLs for legislation to populate referring mandate metadata

  - RSS feeds for a given legislation

  - RDF descriptions of legislation

  This could empower a new level of legal-literacy. A law is created (or revised) and a citizen is able to quickly examine how that impacts services or programs the government may provide to them.

  Landgate (WA) - Shared Land Information Platform

  One example of openly accessible public sector information that exists within state government is the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP), a Western Australian cross-government initiative spearheaded by Landgate, the state’s authority on land information. SLIP brings together spatial datasets from approximately twenty agencies (mostly at state level, but also some from local and federal level), and disseminates them ...more »

  One example of openly accessible public sector information that exists within state government is the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP), a Western Australian cross-government initiative spearheaded by Landgate, the state’s authority on land information. SLIP brings together spatial datasets from approximately twenty agencies (mostly at state level, but also some from local and federal level), and disseminates them online through WMS and WFS services. I should point out here that each agency retains FULL custodianship of their own data; SLIP provides the means to publish that data online from a single point.

  Landgate has a significant amount of information which is freely available, including WMS products through our map viewer, WA Atlas (https://www2.landgate.wa.gov.au/waatlas/). Other data, including cadastral, topographic and imagery data is also available to all, at a cost. Landgate is presently considering Creative Commons licensing as part of the National Government Information Licensing Framework Project.

  While there are a diverse range of datasets available through SLIP (the full list can be found at https://www2.landgate.wa.gov.au/slip/portal/services/datasets-available.html) I note there is some overlap between what has already been suggested and what Landgate could contribute:

  -Administrative boundaries: Suburbs, localities, Local Government Authorities and even individual council wards

  -Land title information: Cadastral information

  -Road and railway line data

  -Topographic data, particularly spot heights, contours and points of interest

  -Community facilities such as Public Access Ways and building footprints

  -Native title data

  -Aerial photography and imagery

  SLIP data can be accessed in a variety of ways, including the aforementioned WA Atlas, or using any of the GIS applications available.   I manage a short term accommodation program in SA. The eligibility criteria ia basically a degree of genuine need. The question that I get asked a lot is "Are there any other places that offer a similar program?'. There are many respite centres that offer short term breaks to those who qualify under their particular set of criteria but very few centres that offer the same short break for those who may be under 65 or ...more »

  There are many respite centres that offer short term breaks to those who qualify under their particular set of criteria but very few centres that offer the same short break for those who may be under 65 or who may have a short term need, eg post operation etc.

  A listing of those centres who offer an affordable short break to those in need - not primarily a financial need as there is still a cost to be borne by the client - would assist these clients to access a break perhaps more often or in a different setting.

  We cater for the aged and also those with disabilities and those who may require a break after a long term health treatment. The client may be a carer or not, may be a care recipient or not but must have a genuine need for an affordable short term break.

  We liaiase well with the many agencies funding respite breaks but it would be great to have a listing of those centres which are available to those who often ' fall through the gaps'.

  This cetrainly includes families with young children and those who are younger disabled. This often involves 24/7 caring by the family unit and it is vital to all family members to have a break in a new setting to recharge the batteries.

  A listing of those centres able to provide this accommodation would be a valuable tool to many families who provide care and to many people who find mainstream accommodation does not suit their needs.

  APIs or RSS feeds for jobs within Australian Government. Potential syndication with the other 'big three' job sites, not to mention the authoring agencies.

  If government wants to hire the best people, they could look at widening the scope of reuse of their core job advertisements.

  Currently aihw.gov.au supply aggreganted data on health interventions (using ICHI) and primary diagnoses (ICD) across Australian hospitals, using it's cognos server to slice the data.   If the data were available at the level of individual hospitals or localities (and if available, the electorate of any non-hospital doctors), then mashups with other localized datasets (crime, air quality, industrial activity) might help "amateur" epidemiologists. It would be even better if data were not aggregated over an entire year, but broken up into quarters or months to help discover seasonal variations.

  One reason why this data is very suitable for leveraging is that AIHW already has a very complete metadata dictionary (METeOR = METadata Online Repository) in place.

  Presently, no common way of describing a public consultation seems to exist. I don't imagine that a calendar or API of 'current / closing soon / recent closed' consultations being conducted by government could exist without first finding a way to aggregate the consultations easily?

  This wouldn't strictly be a dataset so much as a feed or calendar, allowing citizens to easily browse and discover consultations by topic, tag, agency, jurisdiction or date.
