I manage a short term accommodation program in SA. The eligibility criteria ia basically a degree of genuine need. The question that I get asked a lot is "Are there any other places that offer a similar program?'. There are many respite centres that offer short term breaks to those who qualify under their particular set of criteria but very few centres that offer the same short break for those who may be under 65 or... more »
One of the barriers to publication/disclosure of useful data sets is that it is a low priority compared other policy or service delivery obligations. The reality is that agency heads prioritise activities towards those things that are critical to delivery of their outputs and that are reported on in annual reports. Publication and disclosure of data requires effort (to ensure that the data is 'clean', accurately described... more »
The McCusker Foundation raises funds for Alzheimer's disease research. Much of our research requires volunteers to participate in the research project. We also provide services to people who have conceerns with their memory. Our difficulty is being able to link with those who have early symptoms of memory loss or other cognitive issues. They only come to attention after the problem is so severe as to be referred to a... more »
It may not strictly be a 'dataset', but as a publisher of policy-relevant research I'd be very keen to see the Commonwealth style manual made available online under creative commons license - it would be simple to do, and those who wanted a hard copy could still buy one. http://publications.gov.au/styleManual.html (The latest version seems to have been prepared by DCITA(??) http://au.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0701636483.html)... more »
The CSIRO works with government and others to model Australia's future and to give "detailed assessments of development sustainability and the best options to support sustainability in Australia." To support this work the CSIRO has developed the 'National Physical Account and Policy Resource' which includes both the Australian Stocks and Flows Model (ASFF) and OzEcco (an embodied energy model of Australia's economy).... more »
The APH rss feeds for new Senate Committee Inquiries & upcoming hearings are a good start, but they contain very little information. As a citizen trying to plan my contributions to the policy process, I would find it much more useful to be able to subscribe to a calendar feed which provides the key dates for upcoming & current inquiries (including opening & closing dates for submissions, dates & locations of public hearings,... more »
There can be significant and dangerous gaps within the state spatial framework data sets (eg Roads, Addresses, Features). This appears to be due to administrative anomalies associated with how spatial datsets are assembled (in Victoria its always been bottom up with data coming from local governmnets, usually as a sideline in the arrangements for titles, rates, transfers etc.) Many of these are legacies of land management/ownership... more »
http://www.environment.gov.au/about/media/imagedb/index.html Department of environment currently charges for access to its image library. There are thousands of beautiful images of our natural flora and fauna, and NRM projects etc - some are even georeferenced already. They should be publicly available.

It is difficult and time consuming to access very basic location data for a wide variety of Commonwealth managed, owned, funded or leased facilities within the State of Victoria. The ability to access this data through our own systems is critical for emergency services. However, we often require custodians in Australian Government. To date, these requests have proved an extremely frustrating exercise. Australian... more »

One example of openly accessible public sector information that exists within state government is the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP), a Western Australian cross-government initiative spearheaded by Landgate, the state’s authority on land information. SLIP brings together spatial datasets from approximately twenty agencies (mostly at state level, but also some from local and federal level), and disseminates them... more »
Some old data is provided at http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/publicationsstatisticsforms/aadtdata/index.html?plid=trafficvolume but it is "© COPYRIGHT ROADS AND TRAFFIC AUTHORITY 2003" No license is given so it must be All rights reserved. 1. The data needs a much looser licence (this is just data it should be copyright free) or to be release into the public domain. 2. We need current real time data, not just historical... more »
