Development applications

I know this is a local government responsibility, but making development applications available would be awesome. City of Sydney already does a litmited version of this

http://cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Development/DAsOnExhibition/DAExhibitionMAP.asp

But why can't Australians, wherever in the country they live, subscribe to development applications for their area straight into their inbox?
